A 32 panel, 15.68kW Aiko solar array paired with 27.12kWh of Sigenergy battery storage and a Gateway for whole home backup.

Designed and installed in Thanet, Kent by Creative Low Carbon.

When Matt came to us, the brief was refreshingly clear. Fill the roof, store as much as sensibly possible, and keep the house running when the street goes dark. No cookie cutter package, no 4kW starter system with a "you can always add more later" shrug. Just a properly sized system, designed around the house rather than around a price point.

So that is what we built.

32 panels, 15.68kW, split across two roofs

On the roof we installed 32 Aiko 490W panels, 16 on each face, for a total array of 15.68kW. Aiko modules remain the highest performing all black panels per square metre we can specify, which matters enormously when roof space is the limiting factor rather than budget. More watts per tile means more generation from the same footprint, and a roof that still looks like a roof rather than a science project.

Splitting the array evenly across two faces does something clever that a single south facing block cannot: it flattens and widens the generation curve. Instead of one sharp midday spike, you get useful output from early morning through to late evening. For a household that uses electricity across the whole day, that is worth more than a taller peak.

A 12kW Sigenergy inverter and 27.12kWh of storage

The array feeds into the Sigenergy 12kW Energy Controller, still the largest single phase inverter available in the UK. With an array this size, anything smaller would be throwing away generation on bright days. This one lets the system stretch its legs.

Behind it sit three Sigenergy 9.04kWh batteries, giving 27.12kWh of usable storage. That is a serious bank. Enough to run the house overnight on cheap off peak electricity, cover an evening peak without touching the grid, and still hold reserve for whatever the weather does next.

And because Sigenergy is modular, it is not a closed door. Add an EV, add a heat pump, add another battery module. The system grows with the house.

Whole home backup with the HomePro SP-F gateway

The Sigenergy HomePro SP-F gateway is the part most people do not realise they want until the first power cut.

It delivers true whole home backup. Not a single "essential loads" socket in the hallway, but the actual house. Fridge, freezer, router, security system, lighting, all of it. Changeover is instantaneous, so nothing reboots, nothing flickers, and nobody notices except the neighbours standing in the dark.

AI mode, and paying yourself to store energy

The Sigenergy AI mode is where the system starts earning its keep. Overnight it charges on cheap off peak rates, then sells back to the grid at a profit before recharging ready for the expensive on peak window the following day. That is energy arbitrage running quietly in a garage, every single night, without anyone touching an app.

Built in the garage, built to PAS 63100

The full stack lives in the garage, which is the sensible place for it: cool, accessible, and out of the way. Garage installations fall under PAS 63100, the UK standard covering battery storage in domestic buildings, so the space is fitted with interlinked fire detection to meet it in full.

We mention this because plenty of installers still do not. If a quote for a garage or loft battery makes no reference to PAS 63100 or fire detection, that is a question worth asking before you sign anything.

The result

A home generating 15.68kW at peak, storing 27.12kWh, running through a power cut without blinking, and trading energy while everyone sleeps. Independent, efficient, and comfortably ahead of whatever the energy market does next.
