How is a Solar PV mounting system installed?

Installing a solar photovoltaic (PV) mounting system may seem daunting at first, but once broken down, it's straightforward- especially when carried out by trained professionals. The below should help walk you through how a typical mounting system is installed on a typical UK residential property, highlighting some leading brands like Clenergy, Fastensol, and Renusol.

Assessing Your Roof

First things first, Creative Low Carbon will examine your roof’s condition, size, orientation, and pitch. The ideal scenario is usually a South-facing roof, but East and West orientations also work well (~80% of the power of a South roof surprisingly!). Roof pitch matters because it affects energy generation, with a typical UK roof angle of 30° - 45° considered optimal.

Planning and Permissions

Most homeowners in the UK can install solar panels without special planning permission- it's often classed as permitted development. However, if your home is within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), conservation area, listed building (or curtilage of), or World Heritage Site, you'll need to secure planning permission first. This doesn't mean you can't have solar PV, it just means there are a few additional steps. Thankfully, we can guide you through this process smoothly, or ensure the designed system matches the planning requirements.

Selecting the Right Mounting System

Choosing a quality mounting system is crucial. Brands like Clenergy, Fastensol, and Renusol have earned solid reputations for reliability, ease of installation, and longevity. Creative Low Carbon will recommend the best suited brand based on your roof type, be that a conventional tile, slate, metal, or flat, and the weather conditions of your area. For example, we may suggest a different brand if you're right on the coast.

Installation Steps

The professional installation of a solar PV mounting system usually follows these steps:

  1. Installing Roof Anchors: Roof anchors (or as we call them "J-hooks") are fixed directly onto the rafters beneath your roof tiles. Properly locating and securing these is crucial to ensure structural integrity.

  2. Attaching Rails: Aluminium rails from brands like Clenergy or Renusol are attached securely to the anchors. These rails support and secure your solar panels, ensuring stability even in harsh weather.

  3. Fitting Panels: The panels themselves are then carefully secured to the rails using clamps. The spacing and orientation are key to maximising sunlight capture and system efficiency.

  4. Connecting Wiring: All panels are connected through weatherproof cabling, which links to your inverter. Creative Low Carbon will ensure neat and safe wiring that meets electrical regulations.

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

Creative Low Carbon knows the pitfalls, but here are some common issues we've seen amateurs make:

  • Incorrect Anchor Spacing: Insufficient anchors or improper spacing can compromise the system’s integrity.

  • Ignoring the 400mm border: The MCS states that a 400mm border from the edge of a panel to the edge of a roof is required

  • Poor Waterproofing: Inadequate sealing around roof penetrations can lead to leaks and costly repairs.
